This page contains information about Ptarmigan Treks grading system. The grading system has been put in place to help you decide what type of walk you want and what suits your current level of fitness.


Easy:

These walks are mainly on level terrain and good tracks involving little or no ascent, the emphasis is on a leisurely pace. Walking time ranges from 2 to 5 hrs, with distances from 4 to 10 miles (6.4 to 16km).


Moderate:

Walking generally on good tracks or paths, but could involve crossing some rougher terrain, still on fairly level ground but may have some short steeper sections. Walking time will normally range from 4 to 7 hrs, the distances ranging from 6 to 12 miles (9.6 to 19.2km).


Intermediate:

These are a mixture of mountain walks or longer low level walks over varying terrain, distances ranging from 10 to 16 miles (16 to 25.6km). Walking time from 5 to 8 hrs may include ascents and descents ranging between 1500ft to 4500ft (450m to 1350m), some may be quite steep.


Strenuous:

This grade involves a long days walking, mainly over mountains and rugged wilderness with ascents & descents ranging from 3000ft to 5500ft (900m to 1650m) this also may include some scrambling and steep climbs. The days normally lasting between 6 to 10 hrs, with distances of 10 to 20 miles (16 to 32km), may include multiple days walking, carrying heavy packs, only recommended for individuals with good hillwalking experience and fitness.
